Dr. Kathy McDermott   Clinical Psychologist

Headshot Dr. McD

What I Do

Hello! I am a registered Psychologist and a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario (Reg. # 2181). As a Clinical Psychologist I have worked within a wide variety of settings. I have had the pleasure of providing therapy/counselling (active listening, guidance and comfort) since 1990.

I help people deal with a wide variety of problems, including:

  • Managing Anxiety, Anger, Depression and other Mental Health issues.
  • Working through Grieving, Loss, Burnout and Isolation
  • Adjusting to life transitions such as Divorce or Separation
  • Coping with Relationships, such as how to adjust to issues that have impacted your significant others.

My approach is client-centred and strengths-focused. I am trained in interpersonal therapy (helping individuals set appropriate boundaries/expectations). Over the years I have augmented my practice with a broad range of evidenced based behavioural/cognitive strategies. I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) therapeutic schema into my practice.

ACT is a shorter-term treatment that involves active participation in experiential exercises (and at times, homework). It provides cognitive/behavioural strategies to manage debilitating fear, sadness and self-sabotaging behaviours so that you are able to engage in the life you want with fuller attention, curiosity and ability to commit to your values and goals.

My Training

I hold a Ph.D. and M.A. in Clinical Psychology from York University, an M.A.Sc. in Human Relations & Counselling Studies from U. of Waterloo, and an Hons. B.A majoring in Psychology from University of Guelph.
