Dr. Kathy McDermott   Clinical Psychologist

You may be in crisis and your distress is compelling you to seek help or, perhaps, you want to explore long-standing issues and/or problematic relationships, etc. Typically, you have a blend of immediate issues that need addressing and long-standing issues that are rooted in historical pain.

In my therapeutic work, I try to gain a well-rounded understanding of you: what’s important to you (what you value), the person you are and the one you may want to be. At the same time, I will try to address your immediate concerns and those that arise along the way.

Throughout treatment you will determine whether you want to focus on specific issues and take action or whether you want to explore what you have experienced in life and how it is currently impacting your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Throughout our collaboration, I will make every effort to provide a safe and comfortable space for you to share your thoughts and experiences. One where unhelpful judgment is suspended. I will also encourage you to reflect critically on our work together. I need to hear your reactions for our working alliance to strengthen. In short, I need you to feel comfortable in telling me when you think you have been misunderstood or misinterpreted within the session. I need for you to feel comfortable in providing feedback about what is working for you and what is not.

I want to reiterate something I have said at the outset: Regardless of your decision to enter therapy or not, my hope for you is that you treat yourself with compassion, as you would a good friend. Be kind, forgiving and nurturing toward yourself. Keep reminding yourself to do this, especially when you are feeling down and overwhelmed, as it will give you some peace on which you can begin to make changes.

Insurance Coverage

Psychological services are not covered by OHIP. However, as a registered psychologist my services are covered by most extended health benefit insurance plans. Please check your insurance plan regarding coverage and claim procedures (e.g., whether or not a letter or referral from your physician is required, details required on receipts, amount per person per calendar year). I do not provide direct billing.
